PAR: Predictive Assessment of Reading Research

Predictive Assessment of Reading (PAR) is based on over 20 years of research by a team of researchers, led by Frank Wood, Ph.D., in the neuropsychology department at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.  PAR has been given to more than 12,000 students, including full respresentation of African-American and Hispanic/Latino students.

PAR gauges the phonemic awareness, fluency, single word reading and vocabulary knowledge of students K - 3rd grades, and predicts reading ability in 8th grade with high accuracy.

PAR is comprised of four subtests: Letter-Word Calling; Vocabulary Knowledge; Phonemic Awareness; Rapid Naming.  Although the subtests are familiar to most educators, PAR's unique advantage is its ability to predict future reading proficiency.

  • Concurrent validity and reliability both with R's above .90
  • Long term prediction, concurrently and through 8th grade
  • Excellent correlation with nationally standardized reading tests, including Woodcock-Johnson
  • Predicts long term reading level including comprehension

These tests results can be used for:

  • Screening

The examiner immediately receives a one page report of scores through a secure web site. In addition, recommendations are included for focus and intensity of remediation needed.
